Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 10:00AM we are having Peanut dedicated. I guess in a way we are dedicating ourselves to raise him in a Christian home.

Anyway all of our friends and family are invited to come. There is more information about it on the Blackhawk Church website. In case you need directions to the church.

Update

I've been meaning to write more on the blog, but much of my time in front of a computer is at work. Without Shane around there isn't any downtime at all anymore at work...anyway enough of the excuses.

People often ask who Peanut looks like, so I was wondering where does he get his traits from. Here's my thoughts so far.

Blue eyes - Kim has blue eyes as well as my dad. Interestingly enough Wikipedia says my eyes are green not hazel.
Nose - He lucked out here and has Kim's nose.
Feet - I think he's gonna be tall and have big feet like me.
Skinny - So far he's pretty skinny, I'm giving this one to the mailman. On second thought, the postal carrier is a woman.
Hair - it is brown like both of us.
Big goofy smile with his tongue out - that's all me baby.

He started rolling over both ways now. It was that he'd roll one way and then would be done, pretty much exhausted from the effort. But now it is both ways. He can hold his head up and is fairly stable, but not completely. With the rolling around he can travel a good foot or two while on the ground. I guess this means the gates are going up soon. He's grasping at things

He's starting to be a little more vocal. When we try to get him to speak, he is starting to catch on to the idea and make noises that are starting to have the right inkling of the idea. Mostly it is "aahh" "gaah" "oooh" and the like.

100 Days Old

So after the first 100 days in office...

Peanut is still working on rolling over. He gets up on his side and doesn't make it all the way over onto his belly. He has an arm out in front of him, and deadlifting his head over his body is a little much for him still.
He's a little more talkative. I've discoverer that just waiting for him to speak is the way to do it. If you talk to him he politely waits for you to finish speaking before he speaks.
He is able to hold his head up for longer periods of time. Still not steady, but it has gone from completely floppy if you aren't careful to a slight drunken wobble.
Last Friday he was 10 pounds 5 ounces, gaining the good portion of a pound in a week. Still just right at the line in terms of weight for his age.
I recorded Christopher trying roll over onto his belly from his back. It was a little surprising to see him try to roll onto his tummy since the first thing he does when he is on his belly is to roll onto his back. I really thought he might do it, and he put in a pretty good try. The video clears up after a couple of seconds.
Peanut Greatest Achievements

I guess people want to know what the Peanut is up to.

Smiling. A great big happy smile, it feels like genuine happiness when he smiles. It is somewhat fleeting, but it is the highlight of any day.

Reaching out. He will reach out to bat at things with his hand.

Grasping. Watch out if he gets his hand on something. The grip he has can rip flesh from your body, we bare the scar to prove it.

Standing. He has no balance, but he can support his weight on his legs.

Hold his head up. He can support his head for longer and longer periods of time.

Roll over. I know this isn't new, but the doctor say he doesn't do it on purpose. I wholeheartedly disagree with the good doctor, and it is on YouTube to prove it. He will tuck one hand under his side, lift his legs up, kick sideways, while arching his back. He does it regularly so it isn't like luck that I caught it on tape.

Vocalizing. Yesterday Kim read that we should be encouraging him by saying simple syllables repeatedly. So I was practicing "Aaahh" with him. A couple of times he did it with me. Mostly he'd move his jaw with me when I did it. He really liked to play.

Locomotion. He is a ways away from crawling yet, but during "Tummy Time" I was moving his legs underneath his body. After I stopped he was still pulling his legs under further than before. He managed to push himself a little bit. I think a major problem is the diapers don't allow his legs to bend all the way forward under him. When he is a little bit larger he'll get there.

Sitting by himself. After being fed and changed he might sit alone for up to 1/2 hour. Sometimes a pacifier will help, he also enjoys the swing.

Height. He is still underweight 1-2% for his age, but he is 16% for height. His feedings are going better for the most part, he is still slow at eating though.

Going for a ride. He love to go places, walks around the block, in the stroller, in the car seat. Anywhere but home.

Looking around. He seems to made it past the intently staring at one thing for a while. Now that he has some head control he will move his head to look at things.

Back from the Great Salt Lake

Actually I only saw the Great Salt Lake from the air. Salt Lake City reminds me of El Paso, with the mountains a bit closer on all other sides. And a little bit greener.

I went out to Utah for training on doing an Oracle E-Business Suites upgrade from 11i to r12. Along with the database upgrade from 9i to 11gr2. It was a week long class, and we barely got to the r12 upgrade on the last day. I won't lie, the class was difficult. On the other hand, I think I exceeded other people's expectations of me. You see I am a long time developer with some basic DBA training, but this is the hardcore DBA thing.

My sister flew into town the day after I left. She stayed with Kim and Peanut, and then we had the weekend together. When Kim went to drop me off at the airport she was a little sad. I asked her what is wrong, and she said "You are going to get some sleep!". Actually I did get some sleep, and I renewed my hatred of airplanes and airlines.
Seven is Magic

Peanut is 7 weeks old and last night he celebrated by sharing with us his first vomit. I can't tell you how honored I was sharing in that.

Kim took him to the doctor's for a weight check last Thursday (I know that's a week ago) his weight was up to 7 pounds 7 ounces (3.37kg). He made it onto the growth chart! He is in the 2nd percentile, which means 2% of children his age weigh less than him, take that 2% of the countries smallest children! On the chart he was moving up faster than the curve, he had a little catching up to do.

He seems a little harder to sooth in the last couple of days, much like the day after grandma left. Some of the stuff I have been reading says the amount of time a baby spends crying peaks at two months, so perhaps he is just starting to ramp up. I've been doing tummy time with him for the last couple of days. At first he hated it and worked to turn himself over (videos of that on YouTube). Now he seems to not mind it nearly as much, although if he is hungry he starts to chew on whatever is in front of him. He'll still get tired of tummy time and turn himself over. It is interesting to seem him move his arms and legs in what will eventually be crawling motions. Just as soon as his arms are strong enough to hold himself up on it will be crawling motions. When he starts kicking a lot I put him up on his feet so that he is standing there holding himself up (with absolutely no balance of his own), every time he seems like he is shocked to be standing like that. His eyes get wide, like, woah, that's what you all have been doing this entire time. I think he is holding his head up for longer periods of time, which I am looking forward to, I don't like it when he suddenly let's his head wobble over.

When we have been giving him baths he doesn't seem to enjoy the actually bathing part, but getting dry again really seems to make him happy. After drying off he'll do the cooing thing.

Mom and Dad Visit

My mom and dad stayed for almost a week with us. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to spend much time with them, of course they came to see Peanut and not me. Mostly by the time I got home from work we ate dinner and then went to bed.

Saturday we drove down to John and Jenny's house in Illinois. It was the first time Peanut has been out of the state. He was fine all the way down, about til we got to Illinois. I guess he isn't a fan of the state. We got pizza on the way down which I think was more trouble than it was worth I am sorry to say. John came home from work for a bit so we got to see him also. Amy was also there and she held him and even changed a few diapers.

Sunday my dad and I did a bunch of work around the house. I realize that I should have had a list of things he could work on while he was here, but I really hate taking advantage of a guest while they are at our house. Probably better than boring them though.

We were pretty excited to hear that Peanut weighs almost 7 pounds now. His weight and amount of time he sleeps at night have both been trending in a positive direction, although they are both a bit of a struggle to maintain.

Also if you want to view some of the videos I have been making of Peanut email me your YouTube account name and I will add you. It is only up to 25 people so it is first come first serve. They are locked down because we really don't want the entire interwebs seeing them.

Happy Monday

Yesterday we went to the doctor's for a weight check on Peanut. We were 15 minutes late, all the lights were against us and we needed gas, and I got the slowest gas pump that ever existed. The good news is that his weight went up pretty well since last Friday, they had been concerned that it wasn't going up fast enough. The doctor says he is getting back on track.

Afterwards we went to the Come Back Inn for dinner, buy one get one free coupons are a really nice thing. The Jaggermeister Schnitzel was pretty good.

Last night there was a pretty nasty thunderstorm, so there was some water in the basement. Not much, but any water coming in is a concern. I need to get some dirt to grade the ground away from the back of the house. There is a gutter that need to be adjusted also.

In the middle of the storm my mom and dad arrived in their RV. Peanut was asleep in his crib when they got here, so they just got to peak in for a minute. He did wake up and my mom got to hold him before going to bed.

First Father's Day

Sunday was my first Father's day! We went to the early service on Sunday. Carrying him in our arms through church gets lots of "oohs" and "look at the little baby". We took a turn at the web team, even though I had traded for a previous week, so we did an extra one. Peanut slept through the service.

We went home and after feeding and changing him I got my father's day present. A new video camera! It is a digital camera with a hard drive built in. It weighs almost an ounce more than just the battery alone on the old VHS camera. When you plug it into the computer with just a click of a button you can upload videos to YouTube and the like. You can also burn it to a DVD with the click of a button.

After playing with the camera a bit, we grilled some "Disappointing Burgers" which turned out better than expected. We also grilled asparagus wrapped in prosciutto ham. Then we grilled some peaches and put ice cream on top.

My mom and dad will be here either today or tomorrow. I am looking forward to them meeting their grandchild.

One month

Peanut is one month old today. People say you can start to identify babies cries after a while. Here are the ones we have identified so far and their translation into old people speak.

Billy Goat Chris - 1. I am cold and shivering. 2. Finish putting that diaper on me. 3. Wipe the pee off of me and finish putting the diaper on.
Puppy dog whine - 1. I just woke up, and I am not yet sure how I feel about it. 2. I was just about to fall asleep and you woke me.
Cat cry - 1. I just woke up and I do know how I feel about it! 2. I am hungry and I am gonna get loud if you don't feed me in the next 30 seconds.
Full on scream - 1. No one is holding me! I was very patience for well over a minute, but not anymore. 2. It has been more than 10 minutes since I last ate and my cat cry was ignored for more than 30 seconds.
Easily distracted cry - 1. My diaper is need of changing. 2. No, I am fine. 3. No, my diaper needs changing. 4. No, I am fine.
Every other cry - 1. Feed me.
Furrowed brow - 1. While not actual a verbal cry, it is the cry before the cry. 2. Watch my brow furrow until I turn red, my lips curl, and then I am ready to Full on scream.
